Sound(2) Flashcards
What is amplitude?
Amplitude is the maximum height above or below mean position.
What is frequency?
Frequency is the number of waves or oscillations per second and is measured in hertz(Hz).
What mediums can sound travel through?
Sound will travel through anything that has particles:solid, liquid or gas.
How does sound travel in the different states of matter?
Sound travels fastest in solids(around 5000 m/s) due to tightly packed molecules, slower in liquids(around 1500 m/s), and slowest in gases(around 343 m/s) due to their widely spaced molecules.
What are some examples of one solid, gas and liquid that sound travels through?
Solid- Metal, Liquid-Water, Gas-Air
What is an example of sounds in liquids?
Animals such as whales and dolphins communicate with sounds under the water.
How do sounds move in solids, liquids and gases?
Sound waves move the same way in solids, liquids and gases. Sound waves makes the particles vibrate backwards and forwards.
What is a medium?
The substance that the sound wave travels through is called the medium.
What can be mediums for sound waves?
Solids, liquids and gases(which all have particles) can all be a medium for sound waves.
