Sound(3)! Flashcards
To hear a sound, what must there be?
To hear a sound, there must be a vibration to make the sound and a medium containing particles for the sound wave to travel through.
Why can sound not travel in a vacuum?
Sound will not travel in a vacuum as there are no particles to vibrate to make a sound wave.
Why can’t sound travel in space?
Sound can’t travel in space as space is a vacuum.
What is one property of all waves?
One property of all waves is that they can be reflected from surfaces. Thus, sound waves can be reflected.
What does sound reflect best from and examples?
Sound reflects best from large, smooth, flat surfaces. Surfaces such as glass, tiles, flat metal, and smooth concrete give good reflections of sound.
What does effect on the sound mean?
An effect on the sound means the sound is changed.
What is an echo?
An echo is the reflection of a sound wave.
How does a radio make sound?
In a radio, the speaker vibrates and produces sound.
What is an example of an echo that is unwanted?
Some echos are unwanted. For example, when recording music, echos change the sound. A musical note that is played once will repeat with an echo. This effect will spoil the recording.
What kind of room would give many echos?
A room with large flat walls would give many echos.
