Microorganisms!(growing microorganisms) ✨🦠 Flashcards
What is a colony?
A colony is when a single cell of bacterium or fungus is left to grow and it divides repeatedly to make a collection of many cells.
how does a colony help you too se microorganisms without a microscope?
a single microorganism is too small to see without a microscope, but when left to grow, it forms a colony. These colonies are big enough to see without a microscope.
How can growing microorganisms happen safely and what do they need to be?
This can be done safely in the laboratory. Scientists let microorganisms grow in a petri dish containing a special type of jelly called agar jelly. The dish and the jelly need to be sterile.
What does it mean that they should be sterile mean?
The dish and jelly need to be sterile, which means they are clean and any living organisms on them have been killed.
