Sound(1)!✨ Flashcards
How is sound produced?
Things that vibrate make sounds. To vibrate means to move backwards and forwards very quickly.
What is loudness?
Loudness refers to the volume or amplitude of a sound, typically measured in decibels (dB).The more something vibrates, it’s sound is louder.
What is pitch?
The highness or lowness of the tone of a sound is called pitch.
What kind of pitch does thunder make?
Thunder makes a sound with a low pitch.
What kind of pitch does a baby crying make?
A baby crying makes a sound with a high pitch.
What is a sound wave?
Sound travels from a vibrating object to our ears. This is called a sound wave.
What does sound travel in?
Sound travels in waves.
How does a sound wave travel to your ears?
Every time an object vibrates forward, the air in front of the object also gets pushed forward. The particles in the air vibrate backwards and forwards in time with the vibrating object. Now these particles make other particles in front of it vibrate. This makes a sound wave reach our ears.
What is the speed of sound in air?
The speed of sound waves in air is about 343 metres per second.
What can very loud sounds cause?
The vibration of air particles in very loud sounds can cause damage to the ears.
Which type of vibrations can be difficult for the ears to detect?
Vibrations from very quiet sounds can be too small for the ears to detect.
Which kind of energy do sound waves transfer?
Sound waves transfer sound energy.
How can some sounds cause glass to break?
As vibration from air particles is transferred to other objects, and the objects start to vibrate.
