Inhibits calcium influx across cell membranes
Relaxes smooth muscles in vascular wall, decreasing peripheral vascular resistance
Decreases SA and AV node conduction
Verapamil- Indication
SVT/PSVT refractory to Adenosine
AFIB/AFLU
Hypertension
Angina
Verapamil- Contra
Severe CHF
Sick Sinus Syndrome
2nd and 3rd degree Heart Blocks
Blood Pressure less than 90 mmHg systolic
Verapamil- S/E
Cardiovascular: bradycardia, hypotension, AV block, rebound tachycardia
Neurological: dizziness
Verapamil- Routes
IV, IO
Verapamil- A. Dose
2.5 – 5.0 mg IV/IO
with a 2nd dose of 5.0 – 10.0 mg IV/IO in 15-30 minutes
to a maximum dose of 30.0 mg
Verapamil- P. Dose
Infant:
0.1 – 0.2 mg/kg
with a maximum dose of 2.0 mg
Children: 0.1 – 0.3 mg/kg
with a maximum dose of 5.0 mg
Verapamil- EXTRAS
Precautions:
Hepatic and Renal disease
Pregnancy
Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome
Hypotension
Interactions: Ensure patient is not taking Beta Blockers as a home medication
Onset in 3 minutes and may last 10-20 minutes
