furosemide Flashcards
furosemide- Name
Lasix
furosemide- Class
Loop Diuretic
furosemide- MoA
Inhibits reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the renal tubules (Loop of Henle, proximal, and distal renal tubules) thereby increasing urinary output (20 minute onset)
Causes venous pooling (5 minute onset) Decreases workload of the heart
furosemide- Indications
Pulmonary Edema
Hypertensive Emergencies/Crisis
furosemide- Contra
Hypovolemia
Pregnancy
Renal/hepatic failure
Suspected electrolyte imbalances
Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides
furosemide- S/E
Cardiovascular: hypotension, dehydration, ventricular fibrillation, circulatory collapse
Neurological: blurred vision, tinnitis, hearing loss, syncope, seizures
Gastrointestinal: nausea/vomiting
furosemide- Routes
IV, IO
furosemide- A. Dose
20-120 mg slow IVP/IO (20 mg/minute)
or 0.5 mg/kg
furosemide- P. Dose
0.5-2 mg/kg slow IVP/IO (20 mg/minute)
usually start with 1mg/kg
furosemide- Extras
Interactions: Increased risk of cardiac dysrhythmias if patient is taking Digitalis or Lithium
Onset in 5-10 minutes and can last 3 hours
Hearing loss and tinnitis are typically caused by a rapid IVP rather than a slow IVP
Assess lung sounds before and after administration, and frequently throughout patient contact
History of daily Furosemide use is important to ascertain as prehospital dosing is typically based on PO dose.
