Moderate to severe pain

HHAAM
Head injuries
Hypovolemia
Abdominal pain of unknown etiology
Altered level of consciousness
Multi-system trauma
Meperidine- S/E
Cardiovascular: bradycardia, hypotension, increased ICP
Neurological: sedation Respiratory: respiratory depression
Gastrointestinal: dry mouth, nausea/vomiting
Meperidine- Routes
IV, IO, IM
Meperidine- A. Dose
25-50 mg IV
or 50-100 mg IM
Meperidine- P. Dose
1 mg/kg IV/IM
Meperidine- EXTRAS
Precautions: History of seizures
Interactions: Other CNS depressants will potentiate the effect
Onset in 5 minutes IV and in 10 minutes IM; may last 2-4 hours Naloxone will reverse effects of an overdose
