Anticholinergic (Parasympatholytic)
Bronchodilator
Ipratropium Bromide- MoA
Inhibits interaction of acetylcholine at receptor sites on bronchial smooth muscle,
thereby allowing bronchodilation
Ipratropium Bromide- Indication
Bronchospasms due to
COPD, allergic reaction asthma
refractory to other Beta2 agonists
Ipratropium Bromide- Contra
Hypersensitivity to atropine, soybean or peanut products
Ipratropium Bromide- S/E
Cardiovascular: palpitations
Other: dry mouth
Ipratropium Bromide- Routes
Nebulized and inhaled: HHN, mask
Ipratropium Bromide- A. Dose
0.5 mg mixed with 2.5 mg Albuterol
Ipratropium Bromide- P. Dose
0.5 mg mixed with 5.0 mg Albuterol
and then administer only half of the volume
Ipratropium Bromide- EXTRAS
Precautions: Not intended as a first line treatment for bronchospasm
Use with caution in those who are pregnant, lactating, or have a history of glaucoma, coronary artery disease or hypertension
Interactions: None
Onset in 15 minutes with peak effect at 1-2 hours, and may last 3-4 hours
Albuterol has a shorter time of onset, and should be used as the initial treatment
