Competitively blocks histamine receptors in the GI tract
Blocks cholinergic receptors in the vomit centers
Increases acetylcholine action on GI smooth muscles
PROMETHAZINE- Indications
Nausea/vomiting
Motion sickness
Potentiates effects of analgesics
Sedation
PROMETHAZINE- Contra
Patients who have received large amounts of depressants
PROMETHAZINE- S/E
Cardiovascular: tachycardia, bradycardia
Neurological: dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision, mental and physical impairment
PROMETHAZINE- Routes
IV, IO, IM
PROMETHAZINE- A. Dose
12.5 - 25 mg
PROMETHAZINE- P. Dose
0.25 – 0.5 mg/kg
PROMETHAZINE- EXTRAS
Precautions: May cause dystonic reactions
Interactions: Significant CNS depression may occur when patient is also using/receiving barbiturates, narcotics, alcohol or tranquilizers
Onset in 30-60 minutes and may last 4-6 hours
