Allergic symptoms
Dystonic reactions or extrapyramidal symptoms
Diphenhydramine- Contra
Acute asthma (relative contraindication)
Nursing mothers
Glaucoma
Diphenhydramine- S/E
Cardiovascular: tachycardia, hypotension, palpitations
Neurological: drowsiness, seizures
Respiratory: mucus plugs, wheezing
Diphenhydramine- Routes
IV, IO, IM, PO
Diphenhydramine- A. Dose
25-100 mg slow IVP/IO (25 mg per minute) or deep IM
Diphenhydramine- P. Dose
1 mg/kg slow IVP/IO (25 mg per minute) or deep IM
Diphenhydramine- EXTRAS
Precautions: May precipitate an acute asthma attack due to thickening of the mucosal secretions. However, it should not be withheld from a patient having an allergic reaction simply due to a history of asthma
May increase intra-ocular pressure
Interactions: Use with caution for patients on sedatives, tranquilizers or alcohol
Onset in 1-15 minutes depending upon route used and may last 3-4 hours
