In relation to arterial blood supply, what is different?
Both the left and the right have a brachiocephalic trunk.
What does the internal jugular vein drain?
Head and neck structures.
What does the subclavian vein drain?
The upper limbs.
Does the superior vena cava have valves?
No
What is unique about the left pulmonary vein?
Pulmonary vein carries OXYGENATED blood back to the heart.
veins usually carry deoxygenated blood
What is the function of the right pulmonary vein?
Transfers blood to the left atrium.
What is the function of the inferior vena cava?
Carries blood from lower structures back to the heart.
What is a structural difference between the superior and inferior venae cavae?
Superior has no valves. (blood flowing in direction of gravity)
Inferior has valves!!
What vessels unite to form the superior vena cava?
The interal jugular vein and the subclavian vein.
What does an obstruction of the vena cava cause?
Increase in blood pressure within the lungs and the right side of the heart.
