Tooth Solubility Flashcards
1
Q
What is a chelating agent?
A
Mops up ions i.e. calcium.
Increases erosion, shifts equilibrium to the right.
2
Q
What do Fluoride ions do?
A
Binds to hydroxyapatite, replacing the OH group.
3
Q
What is the benefit of fluoride ions binding to hydroxyapatite?
A
F ions create a more stable molecule.
Reduces enamel solubility.
Inhibits bacterial metabolism of carbohydrates.
Promotes enamel remineralisation by saliva.
4
Q
What happens when equilibrium of hydroxyapatite is shifted to the right?
A
Solubilisation of calcium phosphate.
5
Q
What happens to the equilibrium of hydroxyapatite when it is shifted to the left?
A
Promotes remineralisation and inhibits solubilisation.
