Where is masticatory mucosa found?
Hard palate and alveolar bone region.
Describe the masticatory mucosa in term of keratin.
Parakeratinised.
Occurs quickly, so nucleus is still present.
What is present on the tongue?
Papillae, some may have taste buds.
Name the keratinised surfaces of the oral mucosa.

List the cell layers and their roles.
Corneum: High conc of keratinised cells.
Granulosum: Cells start to produce keratin.
Spinosum/prickle cell layer: Desmosomes present.
Stratum Germinativum/basal cell layer: Single layer of cells. Cells divide at this layer.
What cells are found in the oral mucosa?
Melanocytes: Produce pigment
Merkel cells: Aoociated with mechanoreceptors.
Langerhans cells: Antigen presenting cells.
What is the vermillion border?
Joins skin and the labial mucosa.
What gland is present in the oral mucosa that produces a wax like substance that has a role in protection?
Sebaceous glands.
What is geographical tongue/ benign migratory glossitis/glossitis migrans?
Loss of filiform papillae. (red colour)
Biofilm of bacteria trapped on remaining papillae (white colour)
