Occlusion Flashcards
What is occlusion?
The study of the relationship between the upper and lower teeth when they are closed.
How many mm apart are teeth in their resting position?
3-4mm
What is the most stable position for the teeth to be in?
Intercuspal postion.
When is the retruded contact position used?
For denture work when the ICP isn’t obvious. (No teeth)
Where do posterior teeth occluded in the ICP position?
Lower buccal cusps and upper palatal cusps occlude at fossa and marginal ridges of the opposing teeth.
Where do anterior teeth occlude in the ICP position?
Lower incised edge occlude against the cingulum of the opposing teeth.
What techniques are used to highlight balanced occlusion?
Articulating paper and Shimstock.
What causes over-eruption of the teeth?
No opposing tooth.
What is a traumatic bite?
Teeth occlude the tissue and cut the tissue.
What is canine guidance?
Laterotrusive movements of the mandible result in only the canine coming into contact.
What is group function?
Not only the canine contacting but many other teeth contacting.
Occurs if there are no prominent cusps.
Can you have canine guidance on one side and group function on the other?
Yes
What is an articulator?
A device that holds casts and can replicate mandibular movement.
