The Central Nervous System Flashcards
What is the CNS composed of?
Brain
Spinal cord.
What is the CNS covered by to provide protection?
Meninges
Name the 3 layers of meninges.
Dura matter (outside)
Arachnoid membrane
Pia matter
Name the regions of the spinal cord.
Cervical: 8 Thoracic: 12 Lumbar: 5 Sacral: 5 Coccygeal: 1
In the grey matter of the spinal cord, what end is the dorsal horn?
Smaller, posterior end.
In the grey matter of the spinal cord, what end is the ventral horn?
The larger, anterior end.
What is contained within the dorsal horn?
Afferent nerve terminals.
What is contained within the ventral horn?
Cell bodies of efferent motor neurons
Is the grey matter on the outside or the inside of the spinal column?
Grey matter on the inside.
Why does the white matter appear very dark?
Myelin stains dark.
What area of the spine has the largest amount of white matter? Why is this?
Cervical region, has greater no of organs to supply.
In the brain; Where is the grey matter located?
On the outside.
Name the structures of the forebrain?
Cerebrum
Diencephalon: (Thalamus and hypothalamus)
Thalamus:
Sensory signals.
Hypothalamus: Thermoregulation, hormone production.
What is the function of the cerebrum?
Language, memory, emotions, perception.
What is the role of the midbrain?
Auditory function.
Pain control.
