What is vasa praevia?

A

Unprotected foetal vessels transverse in the membranes below presenting part over intracranial cervical os

  • Rupture during labour or at amniotomy
  • Type 1 & Type 2

A

Placental abnormalities: bilobed, succenturiate lobes
History of low lying placenta
Multiple pregnancy
IVF

Diagnosis of VP?

A

US TA & TV Doppler

Clinical- sudden dark red bleeding and foetal bradycardia

Management of VP?

A

Antenatal: steroids from 32 weeks, consider inpatient, deliver by elective C section before labour 34-36 weeks
APH from VP: Emergency C section
Placenta for histology
