What is adenomyosis?
A
-Condition where endometrial tissue is found in myometrium
Endometrial deposits communicate with uterine cavity but often contain altered blood in the glands which become cystic

Who gets adenomyosis?
A
- Parous women (have produced offspring)
- Usually diagnosed in 4th decade

Presentation of adenomyosis?
A
- Heavy menstrual bleeding and dysmenorrhea (menorrhagia)
- Condition regresses after menopause

Clinical exam in adenomyosis shows?
A
Symmetrically enlarged and tender

Why do symptoms of adenomyosis regress after menopause?
A
Symptoms caused by cyclical changes in endometrial tissue in myometrium, menopause stops these changes

Medical management of adenomyosis?
A
- Mirena coil
- NSAIDs
Can both relieve symptoms

Surgical management of adenomyosis?
A
- Uterine artery embolization
- Hysterectomy
