validation - question one Flashcards
section one
to be considered a living thing the areas we can look at is movement, respiration, growth, energy processing, homeostasis and reproduction.
section two-movement
movement involves living things moving in a controlled and directed manner. an example is a plant performing phototropism which involves them moving towards sunlight in order for them to survive so they can produce the food they require.
section three - respiration
respiration refers to the exchange of respiratory gases. all living organisms respire because without they will die. cells use the energy formed through this process to assist with survival and reproduction.
section four - growth
growth is the increase of an organism’s size. an example of growth is the metamorphosis phase in a caterpillar forming a cocoon around themselves to transform into a butterfly
section five - reproduction
reproduction refers to offspring being produced through asexual or sexual reproduction. an example is female snakes laying eggs as they don’t have a male partner to sexually reproduce with
section six - sensitivity
sensitivity is a measure of how strong the reaction to a certain stimulus is. The sense of touch is especially used by animals that cannot see very well. An example is spiders rely on vibrations to tell when an insect has landed on their web.
section seven - nutrition
Nutrition is the process by which an organism takes food and uses it to get energy. through the process of photosynthesis, cyanobacteria convert carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates. They are stored in the form of starch.
section eight - excretion
Excretion is a process in which metabolic waste is eliminated from an organism. An example is mammals expelling their urine through the urethra, which is part of the excretory system.
