cell theory Flashcards
1
Q
what are cells
A
They are the basic unit of life. They are the smallest structural and functional units of an organism.
2
Q
what is the cell theory
A
The cell theory states all living organisms are composed of one or more cells and that all cells come from pre-existing cells
3
Q
what are the types of cells
A
- Prokaryotic
- Eukaryotic
4
Q
what are the similarities between both types of cells
A
- Both eukaryotic and prokaryotic have some kind of cell membrane
- Both have genetic material in the form of nucleic acids
- Both have cytoplasm
- Both have ribosomes that are used for making proteins
5
Q
what are prokaryotic cells?
A
- simple and singled celled
- smaller than eukaryotic cells
- no membrane-bound organelles
- no nuclues
- DNA is stored as single circular chromosone
6
Q
what are eukaryotic cells
A
- Eukaryotic cells are much more complex
- Organisms can be single-celled or multicellular
- Membrane-bound organelles allow for a multitude of different chemical activities
- DNA is maintained in the nucleus in varying number of chromosomes
7
Q
what organelles allow different chemical activities
A
- nucleus
- mitochondria
- lysosomes
- endoplasmic reticulum
