factors effecting membrane transport Flashcards
what are some factors affecting membrane transport
- concentration gradient
- temperature
- size and shape of cells
- surface area to volume ratio
describe the effect concentration gradient has on transport
The higher the concentration the more frequent the collision meaning the faster the rate of diffusion.
what is Vmax and how does that correspond to the effective concentration gradient has on transport
Vmax is a point that is reached where the proteins will be transporting at a maximum rate which means the rate will stop increasing
why does Vmax occur
because the proteins become saturated
describe the ffect temperature has on transport
Increasing the temperature means the molecules are moving faster and colliding more. This means the rate of diffusion will increase
describe the effect size and shape of cells have on transport
The higher the SA the greater opportunity for the cell to cross the membrane. However, as the SA increases so does the volume. If the volume is too big then substances must travel further to reach organelles, slowing down transport
describe the effect SA to Vol ratio have on transport
When the SA:VOL is high the cell can receive and dispose of material efficiently.
When the SA:VOL is low the cell cannot efficiently receive and dispose of material efficiently
what effect do physical factors have on transport
Smaller molecules are able to diffuse through the plasma membrane. Larger molecules transport via transport proteins or bulk transport to cross the membrane
what effect do chemical factors have on transport
Uncharged molecules are able to pass through the membrane. Charged molecules cannot, as they are hydrophilic and are repelled by the hydrophobic interior. Charged molecules use transport proteins to cross the membrane
