Open and Closed circulatory systems Flashcards
Is the human circulatory system open or closed?
It is a closed system as the blood and nutrients are enclosed in blood vessels
what are the components of blood
- Red blood cells
- Plasma
- White blood cells
- Platelets
The function of red blood cells
carry oxygen around the body
The function of Plasma
Fluid that carries nutrients and carbon dioxide waste
The function of white blood cells
Protect the body from injection, by destroying bacteria in areas of injection,
The function of platelets
Aid in clotting blood
what are the different blood vessels
- Arteries
- Veins
- Capillaries
The function of arteries
Carry blood away from the heart
The function of Veins
Carry blood towards the heart
The function of capillaries
Exchange nutrients and gases with surrounding cells
What is the interstitial fluid
It is the fluid between the cells of a multicellular organism where nutrients and gases diffuse through from capillaries.
What do the capillaries in the lungs and body do
The capillaries in the lungs and the capillaries in the body exchange gases in the opposite directions
What is the structure of the alveoli
Each alveolus is wrapped up in a network of capillaries to make sure gaseous exchange is efficient.
What is the structure of capillaries
Capillary are thin structures with a high surface area to volume ratio
What are open circulatory systems
- The blood cells of insects are not contained within blood vessels separate from the body cells.
- The interstitial fluid and blood are mixed together in what is called haemolymph.
