Q

What are open circulatory systems

A
  • The blood cells of insects are not contained within blood vessels separate from the body cells.
  • The interstitial fluid and blood are mixed together in what is called haemolymph.

Q

Describe the process of an open circulatory system

A
  • Hemolymph is pumped by the heart through vessels into chambers known as sinuses.
  • Each sinus forms a pool around tissues that can absorb nutrients through diffusion
  • Small openings called Ostia, collect this fluid from sinuses as they drain and return it to the heart.
