relationships and interactions Flashcards
what is predation
an interaction between species in which one species, the predator kills another, the prey
what is competition
Occurs when individuals compete for a resource that limits their survival and reproduction.
intraspecific - same species
interspecific - different species
what is symbiosis
a relationship between individuals of two or more species that benefits at least one of the species
what are the three types of symbiosis
- parasitism
- mutualism
- commensalism
what is collaboration
Occurs when members of the same species work together to benefit all
what is disease
infectious diseases are caused by pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria and parasites. The diseases can spread directly and indirectly from one organism to another
what is parasitism
one species, the parasite benefits at the expense of the other, the host
what is mutualism
both species in the relationship benefit and neither is harmed
what is commensalism
one species benefits and the other neither benefits nor is harmed
what is an example of parasitism
Barnacle and crab. a barnacle will root itself within a crabs reproductive system. the crab does not die but its reproductive system capabilities are reduced.
what is an example of mutualism
pistol shrimp and goby fish. The shrimp digs a hole to live in, they cannot detect predators approaching. The goby fish uses the burrow for protecting, in return it acts as eyes for the shrimp
what is an example of commensalism?
remora fish and shark. The remora gets a free ride and possibly some food by attaching to the shark using a suction pad on the back of its head.
what is a host
The parasite is an organism that lives on another organism which is the host
what is an example of an intraspecific relationship
plants competing for sunlight
what is an example of a interspecific relationship
Lions and leopards competing for the same prey
