active transport Flashcards
what is active transport
requires energy as it moves up the concentration gradient
what supplies the energy required for active transport
ATP molecules
what is endocytosis
When the substance meets the plasma membrane part of the membrane extends out to surround the substance. When two projections of the membrane meet they fuse together. This section of the membrane breaks off to form a vesicle
what are the two types of endocytosis
- phagocytosis
2. pinocytosis
what does phagocytosis
takes solids into the cell
what does pinocytosis
takes liquids into the cell
what is an example of endocytosis
Many white blood cells protect the body by destroying bacteria through phagocytosis
what is exocytosis
Substances produced within the cell are packaged and stored in vesicles. When ready to be released the vesicle moves towards the cell membrane and fuses with it causing it to open to release the contents
what is an example of exocytosis
hormones produced in cells are released into the bloodstream by exocytosis
