osmosis Flashcards
what is the difference in concentration referred to as
concentration gradient
what is osmosis
osmosis is the diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration.
how does osmosis work
An area of low solute concentration has a high concentration of water. For the system to reach an equilibrium the water will move from a high water concentration to a low water concentration to dilute the solution
what are the types of solutions
- isotonic
- hypotonic
- hypertonic
what is a hypertonic solution
has a higher solute concentration than the cell
what is a hypotonic solution
has a lower solute concentration than the cell
what is an isotonic solution
is a solution that has the same concentration as the cell
