Levels of organisation Flashcards
describe multicellularity
Multicellularity developed as a result of cooperation between cells. They work together to become more efficient. Eventually, the cells become so adapted that they cannot survive without each other.
what are the benefits of being a multicellular organism
- specialised cells are more efficient
- cells share nutrients
- grow larger and live longer
what are the downsides of being a multicellular organism
- higher energy and nutrient demands
- longer time to reproduce
what are the levels of the organisation
organelle > cells > tissues > organs > organ systems > organism
what is an organelle
a small part of a cell with a specific function
what is an example of an organelle
ribosomes
what is a cell
a small building block of living things
what is an example of a cell
muscle cell
what are tissues
a group of cells that work together to do the same job
what is an example of a tissue
muscle tissue
what is an organ
a group of tissues that work together ti carry out a function
what is an example of an organ
heart
what is an organ system
a group of organs that work together to carry out a function
what is an example of an organ system
circulatory system
