Q

Topography

A

Retinotopic organization at the thalamus and the V1. Objects that are close in the visual field are also close in the V1

Q

Cortical magnification

A

Parafoveal areas take up less space in the V1 (less important info so takes less space)

Q

Cortical modularity

A

Vertical organization and columns, they’re organized in stripes.

Ocular dominance columns; stripes of neurons that connect to one of the eyes. Each line prefers an eye. These lines are acquired by learning

Q

Receptive fields

A

Region in the retina that evokes a response in measured neuron (on-center/off-surround). at the cortex the fields become more complex bc they combine input from multiple LGN cells. It can be specific to a certain orientation (simple cell)

Q

Grandmother cells

A

The higher up the processing stream, the more specialized the neurons (eg fusiform face area, neurons that only respond to grandmother)
