Perturbational methods Flashcards

1

Q

Brain lesions

A

Damage to the brain as a result of eg stroke, or case like gage

+ Gives lot of insight

  • Single case studies
  • Not under control of experimenter (not focal)
  • Difficult to generalize, no two are the same and can be caused by many areas.

Pharmalogical

A

Seeing how drugs interfere with brain (addicts or experimentally controlled)

Q

Agonist and antagonist

A

Bromoaptine eg is an agonist, does the same as real dopamine. Antagonist binds to receptor but blocks it.

  • Very unspecific, effects whole brain

Q

Brain stimulation intracranial

A

Electrical stimulation by implanting electrode in eg subthalamic nucleus, or eg optogenetics where light gated ion channels are implanted.

Q

Brain stimulation extracranial

A

TMS: Magnetic field causing neural activity. Can be single pulse or repetitive (longer). Temp resolution is high but spatial very low

TES: aka tDCS, small current placed directly onto scalp. NOT neural
