The mechanosensory system Flashcards
The cutaneous/subcutaneous system
Processes all tactile info. Possible due to different receptors in the skin. More sensitive areas have higher density of these receptors and smaller fields, creating more precise experience.
Route of stimulus
Dorsal root ganglion - Spinal cord - thalamus - ventral posterior nuclear complex 0 primary somatosensory cortex (S1)
Nociceptive system
Perceives pain and temperature with nociceptors in the skin. (placebo effect; creates same activation to alleviate pain. Inhibited by naloxone)
Propioceptive system
self movement and body positioning
Vestibular system
Acceleration & deceleration of the body, balance
Ventral posterior nuclear complex
In the thalamus. Axons feed it to the S1(parietal lobe)
