Chapter 1 Flashcards
Cognition
Set of processes that perceive external stimuli, to extract key information and hold it in memory. Generating thoughts abc actions tot reach end goal
Cognition characteristics
Acquire information
Store and retrieve in memory
Generate and use to guide actions
Conscious and unconscious
Cognitive models
Try to explain thought process with boxes containing psychological constructs that are linked with arrows
Neuroscience
Study of the brain. How is the nervous system organized and how does it function
Neuron doctrine
2nd half of 19th cent. Idea that nervous system is made up of discrete individual cells (neurons) that communicate with neurotransmitters and action potentials
Main goal of neuroscience
Understanding underlying neural computations and developing neurobiologically grounded models of cognitive functions
Mapping techniques quality
Temporal resolution: time it takes
Spatial resolution: ability to localize exactly
Two goals in research
Convergence: studying concept with different methods to see if same results arise
Complementarity: different methods provide different info, ideally they compliment each other
