Attention Flashcards
Arousal
Mainly created by reticular nucleus. Sheet around the thalamus that either gates or blocks info. The excitability is regulated by the reticular formation in the brain stem. NOT same as attention, but needed to have attention (attention is selective, arousal nonselective)
Selective attention
Covert brain mechanism that enables us to attend to relevant info and ignore irrelevant.
Covert attention
Attention that is not directed towards what you’re looking at. Tested with fixation point
Overt attention
Attention that is directed to where you’re looking
Voluntary attention
Endogenous, top-down intentional attention
Involuntary attention
Exogenous, bottom-up and stimulus driven. Something that flashes eg, catching your attention
Competitiong
Voluntary and involuntary constantly compete with each other. Goal directed behaviour is interrupted by unintentional.
