Urinary System Physiology Flashcards
How many liters of filtrate are produced in the kidneys daily?
180 liters
What is the GFR?
Glomerular filtration rate
What do mesangial cells do?
They phagocytize material trapped in the basement membrane of glomerulus
What are the three categories of substances in blood? (Filtration)
Freely filtered (small substances) (Not necessarily lost in urine) (Ex. Water, Glucose, Amino acid, Ions
Not filtered (Large substances)
Limited filtration (intermediate sized substances)
What are the two types of control with renal autoregulation?
Intrinsic control: within kidney (myogenic response) (tubuloglomerular feedback)
Extrinsic control: outside kidney
What is the myogenic response?
It allows the kidneys to either contract or relax the smooth muscle of the afferent arterial is response to stretch
What is the relationship between stretch and blood pressure?
Lower blood pressure leads to less stress and vice versa
What is the tubuloglomerular feedback mechanism?
It’s a backup to the myogenic system
(If the Glomerular blood pressure increases so will the amount of NaCl in the tubular fluid)
What are Neural and hormonal control of GFR considered?
Extrinsic
What acts a buffer in urine?
Bicarbonate
What is a big difference (referring to GFR) between intrinsic and extrinsic regulation?
Intrinsic methods attempt to keep GFR the same where as extrinsic methods attempt to change GFR
