Fluid And Electrolytes Flashcards
How much of the human body is fluid?
Between 45% and 75%
What is the connection between age and body fluid?
As we age body fluid decreases
What are the two compartments fluid in our body is held in?
Intracellular fluid and extracellular fluid
What are the facts about Intracellular fluid (ICF)?
It’s within cells
It makes up 2/3 of total body fluid
It’s enclosed by a plasma membrane
What are the facts about Extracellular fluid (ECF)?
It’s outside cells
It’s includes interstitial fluid and blood plasma
What are the specific extracellular fluids?
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
Synovial joint fluid
Aqueous and vitreous humor of the eye
Fluids of inner ear
Serous fluids within body cavity
What are the four types of water loss?
Sensible - Measurable
Insensible - immeasurable
Obligatory - Uncontrollable
Facultative - Controlled
What are the 5 categories of fluid imbalance?
Volume Depletion
Volume Excess
Dehydration
Hypotonic Hydration
Fluid Sequestration
What are the 4 hormones involved in regulating fluid output?
ADH
ANP
Aldosterone
Renin
Where is ADH produced? Where is it stored?
ADH is produced in the hypothalamus and it is stored in the posterior pituitary
What does ADH do?
It stimulates thirst centers in hypothalamus
It increases water reabsorption in kidneys
It causes vasoconstriction of systemic blood vessels
What does Aldasterone do?
Increases reabsorption of Na+ and water
Increases secretion of K+
What does Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP) do?
It decreases blood volume and pressure by binding to target organs via vasodilation
What is RAAS?
It’s the Renin, ADH, Aldosterone, system which is activated by low blood pressure
