Urinary incontinence Flashcards
1
Q
what is urinary incontinence?
A
-involuntary voiding
2
Q
what are the 4 types of urinary incontinence?
A
- stress incontinence
- overflow incontinence
- overactive bladder
- functional incontinence
3
Q
what is the treatment of urinary incontinence?
A
- behavioral (as caregiver take to bathroom regularly) (need to provide assistance with pt to get to washroom) (limiting fluid intake before bed) (avoiding caffeine
- drugs (ALPHA ADRENERGIC AGONIST)
- catheters & collecting devices
- SX (for example pelvic dissent can go & reconstruct) (other example prosthetic’s that make sphincter more functional)
4
Q
Stress incontinence (urinary incontinence)
A
(not emotional, from volume & pressure of urine)
- increase intra-abdominal pressure (from coughing & laughing) (intra-abdominal pressure forces on bladder & pushes urine out)
- change in urethro-vesicularangle (in females) (after childbirth can alter angle causing pelvic distent)
5
Q
overflow incontinence (urinary incontinence)
A
- retention & bladder distention
- intravesicular (bladder) pressure is greater than urethral pressure
6
Q
overactive bladder (urinary incontinence)
A
- overactive bladder wall (bladder wall contains muscle that allows to contract)
- neurogenic (nerve innervation to muscle)/myogenic (muscle problem) PROBLEMS
- hyperactive detrusor muscle
7
Q
functional incontinence (urinary incontinence)
A
- cognitively does not know bladder is full or knows full but unable to stand to go to bathroom
eg. Cognitive, physical barriers
