what is pneumonia?
A
inflammation of the alveoli & bronchioles

what are the two forms of pneumonia
A
Infections (caused by microbe/bacteria)
non-infectious (irritating agent such as smoke)

etiology of pneumonia
A
- microbial:– USUALLY BACTERIAL also can be viruses & fungi as well–community & hospital acquired (nossocomal)
- noxious fumes (has to get into lungs to cause inflm) ex. dust particles, smoke
- aspiration

patho of pneumonia
A
- impaired resp defenses (mucociliary blanket, immune system)
- agent enters lungs
- Inflammation–edema—impaired gas exchange

manifestations of pneumonia
A
- fever
- dyspnea
- sputum
- headache
- chest pain
- there will be areas of consolidation (going to have exudate, areas & inflm & inflm of debris, solidifys & causes consolidation)

Diagnosing pneumonia
A
- physical exam
- x-ray
- sputum analysis

Treatment of pneumonia
A
- supportive
- antibiotics if bacterial
