Urinary - Characteristics Of Urine Flashcards
What is filtrate?
Contains everything that blood plasma does (except proteins)
What is urine?
What remains after the filtrate has lost most of its water, nutrients, and necessary ions
What does urine contain?
Nitrogenous wastes and substances not needed for the body
Why might urine smell like ammonia?
If it sits for a period of time it will grow bacteria
Normal pH of urine?
4.5 - 6
affected by diet
Can food affect colour of urine?
Yes
What is specific gravity?
Tells you how concentrated or diluted urine is compared to water
SG average?
1.001 - 1.035
What does high SG mean?
Urine is more concentrated
often due to:
- not drinking enough water (dehydrated)
- fever
- kidney inflammation
What does low SG mean?
Urine is more diluted
Often due to:
- excessive fluid intake (overhydrated)
- taking diuretics
- chronic renal failure
