Respiratory - Functions & Anatomy Flashcards
Functions of the respiratory system?
- produce sounds
- aid in the sense of smell
- gas exchange
- protects delicate tissue of the lungs (by warming up and humidifying air we breath)
What is the cardiac and respiratory system responsible for?
Supplying body with oxygen, and disposing carbon dioxide
What happens if cardiac or respiratory system fails?
Oxygen starvation and buildup of carbon dioxide
What is the V/Q ratio?
Amount of air that enters and leaves alveoli (ventilation) - for the body to obtain oxygen, there needs to be enough air getting to the alveolar region of the lungs
Amount of blood that flows to the alveolar capillaries (perfusion) - must have enough blood flowing through lungs to pick up oxygen so that it can transport to tissues and organs
What is the normal V/Q ratio?
0.8 - amount of air reaching alveoli (ventilation) is slightly less than the amount of perfusion (blood reaching the alveoli)
What are the two parts to the respiratory system?
Upper and lower respiratory system
What structures does the upper respiratory contain?
- nose
- nasal cavity
- sinuses
- pharynx
- larynx
Function of the upper respiratory system?
- filters, warms and humidifies incoming air to protect sensitive epithelial cells in the lungs that can easily become dry and damaged
- reabsorbs heat and water in outgoing air
What structures does the lower respiratory system contain?
- trachea
- bronchi
- bronchioles
- alveoli
What is the function of the lower respiratory system?
- moves air to gas exchange surfaces
- exchange gases with capillaries
