Respiratory - Structures Of The Lower Respiratory System Flashcards
Organ #4 - trachea : where is it located?
Under larynx and connects to bronchi
What is the trachea made up of? Why is this shape?
C shaped rings of hyaline cartilage
C shaped for flexibility, expansion during inhalation, etc
The open part of the C faces the esophagus, allowing the trachea to expand slightly during inhalation & to accommodate food through the esophagus behind it
Why is the trachea lined ciliated mucous?
Expels mucous loaded with dust and other debris away from lungs towards pharynx
Organ #5 - bronchi : where does it form from?
Trachea at T5
What is the difference between right and left bronchi?
Right one is wider and straighter
What does bronchi subdivide into?
Bronchioles (smaller branches)
Difference between bronchioles and bronchi?
Bronchioles contain smooth muscle (SNS and PNS control)
Bronchi have wall containing cartilage
What is the function of bronchioles?
Regulate flow of air into alveoli
What is bronchocontriction?
Less air to lungs
What is bronchodilation?
Increase airflow to lungs
Organ #6 - lungs : where is the heart located if the lungs take up so much room?
Central portion (mediastinum)
What is the hilum?
Found on both lungs
Small entry and exit point for structures that connect lungs to the rest of the body
Lobes of the right and left lung
Right = superior lobe / middle lobe / inferior lobe
Left = superior lobe / cardiac notch for heart / inferior lobe
What is covering the lungs?
A pleural cavity
What does the pleural cavity contain?
Parietal pleural (inner surface of chest wall) and visceral pleural (surface of lungs)
Pleural fluid is found between both layers
