Cardiovascular - Veins And Arteries Flashcards
Arteries carry blood…
Away from heart (efferent)
Veins carry blood…
To heart (afferent)
What is the pulmonary and systematic circuit?
Pulmonary - transport blood to and from lungs
Systematic - transports blood to and from rest of body
What are elastic arteries? Where can you find them? Size?
- large vessels that carry blood away from heart
- Capable of stretching and recoiling
- pulmonary trunk, aorta and branches
What are muscular arteries? Where do they distribute blood? Size?
- medium sized arteries
- distributes blood to skeletal muscles and internal organs
What are arterioles? Size?
Small blood vessels that branch out from arteries into capillaries
How does blood pool down in the legs?
Veins do not push blood like arteries
When sitting or standing in a position for a long time, blood will pool down due to gravity (can lead to things like varicose veins)
What are mechanisms to maintain flow in veins against gravity?
- Valves
- Contraction of skeletal muscle (extract muscles)
- Respiratory pump (have to breath proper)
Where is the most of your blood?
Systematic veins (64%)
What blood vessel allows exchange between blood and interstitial fluid?
Capillaries
What does capillary beds connect?
Several connections between arterioles and venules
What controls flow of blood into capillary bed?
Pre capillary sphincters
Where does blood drain into from systematic venous system?
Superior vena cava (head, chest, and upper limbs)
Inferior vena cava (all structures inferior to diaphragm)
Regions blood travels from aorta
Ascending aorta - leaves left ventricle
Aortic arch - leaves to the left
Thoracic aorta - travels downward through thorax
Abdominal aorta - passes through diaphragm into abdominopelvic cavity
