Q

What is the movement order for oxygen and carbon dioxide?

A

Oxygen tends to flow from capillaries -> interstitial fluid -> cells

Carbon dioxide is the same but opposite way

Q

How is oxygen transported by pulmonary capillaries?

A

Oxygen is picked up and binds to hemoglobin on the red blood cells (turns oxyhemoglobin)

Q

How is oxygen transported by systematic capillaries?

A

Hemoglobin releases oxygen which the diffuses into the tissues (turns de oxyhemoglobin)

Q

How is carbon dioxide transported by systematic capillaries? 3 ways

A
  1. Dissolved in plasma
  2. Bound to hemoglobin
  3. Converted to carbonic acid (then dissociates to bicarbonate and hydrogen)

Q

How is carbon dioxide transported in the pulmonary capillaries?

A

Same methods as systematic, however reverse reaction for bicarbonate ions

Bicarbonate combines with hydrogen to form carbonic acid. Carbonic acid converts to carbon dioxide and water and then diffuses into the alveoli
