Cardiovascular - Structure, Muscle Tissue, Coverings, Location Flashcards
Where is the heart in the human body?
Between lungs (slightly left)
Size of the heart? Weight?
Less than a pound and about the size of a fist
What is the pericardial sac?
Surrounds heart
What is the pericardial cavity?
- contains serous fluid
- Bounded by two serous membrane
Visceral pericardium aka epicardium (attached to heart)
Parietal pericardium (forming outer wall of cavity)
What type of muscle tissue only found in heart?
Cardiac muscle tissue
Where does cardiac muscle cells get blood supply from?
Capillaries instead of ventricles
Why does cardiac muscle cells have a lot of mitochondria?
Because the heart needs a lot of ATP to work
What are the three layers of the heart?
- Epicardium
- Myocardium
- Endocardium
Where is myocardium found? What is it composed of?
Between epicardium and endocardium
Composed of concentric layers of cardiac muscle tissue and blood vessels and nerves
