Types of long term memory Flashcards
what is procedural memory?
- part of LTM responsible for knowing how to do things eg motor skills such as riding a bike 🚲
- procedural memories are ND as do not involve conscious recall
- are of brain responsible for procedural LT memories is the cerebellum and motor cortex
What is Semantic memory?
- part of LTM responsible for storing knowledge about the world 🌎
eg meaning of words such as ‘love’ as well as general knowledge such as facts
eg london capital of england 🏴 - semantic memories are D they do involve conscious recall (not automatic just think about them)
- not time stamped - do not usually remember when and where we learned/coded the info
temporal lobe
what is episodic memory?
storing information abt events (episodes) that we have experienced in our lives at a specific time for example first day of school
D as they do involve conscious recall
are time stamped 🕰 - we remember where and when we coded/learned these memories
Hippocampus 🦛
what did tulving believe?
MSM view of LTM was too simplistic
he proposed that there are different LTM stores : procedural, senantic and episodic
Give a strength into types of LTM
P - neuroimaging evidence to support the notion that there are diff types of LTM
E - ppts asked to perform various memory tasks whilst their brains were scanned using PET scanner
E - it was found that episodic memories was associated with hippocampus wherewas procedural memory was associated w cerebellum and motor cortex
L - therefore supports diff types of LTM because three diff types of LTM were found in diff areas of the brain indicating they are separate
give another strength into types of LTM
P - Moreover r into diff types of LTM, such as described above can be praised as it uses scientific methods
E - objective and empirical techniques such as brain scans 🧠 which are used to identify the diff parts of the brain that become active when completing diff types of LTM tasks
eg the cerebellum and motor cortex being active when carrying a procedural task
L - therefore it cud be argued that this increases overall interval validity of R into types of LTM this raising psychologists scientific status ⬆️
How can we further evaluate r into types of LTM
P - real life evidence from case study of clive wearing
E - he suffers from amnesia in which his episodic memory was damaged as he could not remember some events from his past eg his musical education 🎶
E - however clives procedural memory was still working as he can remember how to play the piano 🎹
L - this supports idea that there are doff types of LTM because if only certain parts of LTM damaged it indicates that they are seperate
> amnesia was caused by a virus that 🦠 damaged hippocampus further supporting that idea that the episodic memory is in this area of the brain
what is the discussion point for clive wearing?
P - criticised as it has low pop val
E - because r was a case study using only Clive as a ppt who suffers from an unusual illness involving damage to the brain
L - therefore diff to GF to wider pop as their LTM may operate diff thus limiting the support that R provided for diff types of LTM
