Type 1/2 Errors Flashcards
1
Q
What is a type 1 error?
A
- R used a lenient P value
- R thinks results r significant when actually due to chance
- wrongly accept null alternative hypothesis
-wrongly reject null
2
Q
What is a type 2 error?
A
- R used stringent P val
- results r not significant (due to chance) when they could be sig
-wrongly accept null
-wrongly reject alternative hypothesis
3
Q
What is the diff b/w Type 1 and 2 error
A
type 1 error the null hypothesis is rejected when it is true whereas in type 2 null hypothesis is accepted when it is false
4
Q
Why do psychs use 5% sig level?
A
- strikes balance b/w the risk of making type 1 and 2 error
- it’s a conventional significance level
5
Q
How would you check for a type 1 error?
A
- compare calc val to critical val from a more STRINGENT P VAL
- if results r now not sig then type 1 error is made
6
Q
How to check for type 2 error?
A
- compare calc val to critical val to more LENIENT P VAL
- if results are now sig type 2 error is made
