What is addiction?

A

Addiction is a disorder in which an individual consumes a substance eg nicotine or engages in a particular behaviour i.e gambling that is pleasurable but eventually becomes compulsive with harmful consequences

What is meant by psychological dependence

A

1) - mental and emotional compulsion to keep taking a substance as I believes not able to cope w work and social life w out particular drug eg nicotine alcohol bh

2) ⬆️ pleasure/lesson discomfort

3) absence of drug causes individual to feel individual anxious or irritable leads to craving substance

Explain what is meant by withdrawal symptoms (4)

A
  1. collection of psychological and physical symptoms an individual exp when they no longer have a substance in their system in a particular bh
  2. Withdrawal syndrome includes low mood , feeling nauseous, achy , in pain or experiencing tremors
  3. when I experiences withdrawal it’s very unpleasant and so containing to take the substance or engage in the bh is partly to avoid wdrawal symptoms

Explain what is meant by the term tolerance (2-4)

  1. Tolerance arises when you have taken substance/maintained certain bh for some time
  2. due to repeat exposure the response to substance/bh is reduced
  3. When tolerance occurs I will need greater doses to feel same physical and psychological effects
