Q

Define the term Localisation of function

A

specific areas of brain are specialised for certain functions
eg motor cortex responsible for voluntary movement

only this area of brain is responsible for this job

Q

Outline brocas area and what damage could cause to this

A
  1. area of brain is involved in production of spoken and written language found in LHS
  2. damage to this area could cause brooks aphasia where a person may show slow speech that lacks fluency they might produce short meaningful speech that reqs great deal of effort

Q

Outline motor cortex and what damage could cause to this

A
  1. involved in creation of voluntary motor movements
(both hemispheres) each hem sphere controls movement of opposite side of body
  2. damage could cause loss of fine motor movements picking up small objects/paralysis aka contralateral wiring

Q

Give RTS for LOC

A

P - RTS LOC comes from Broca
E - reported case study ion a man who lost ability to speak except for one word ‘Tan’ even though he could understand language

E - post Martens showed that damage in one area in LHS which is now named brocas area shows lang production is localised to one specific brain area as theory predicts

Q

Give RTC LOC

A

P - case study of EB
E - EB suffered from brain damage that resulted in removal of his left hemisphere therefore lang centres
E - despite thus after some time EB managed to regain some of his ability which would not be possible if language was completely localised into one area of the brain

L - demonstrating that lang must be in 1> area of 🧠 than just LHS

suggesting holistic explanation of brain functioning is more appropriate than localisation of function
