Fight/Flight Flashcards
Define flight/fight response
- the ANS + endocrine system play major role in stress response in producing f+f response
- where a stressor is identified by 🧠 > activates sympathetic branch of ANS
Outline fight or flight response (4)
- STRESSOR - identified by hypothalamus > activates pituitary gland > triggers activity in sympathetic branch of ANS
- ADRENALINE released by adrenal medulla in blood stream
- the f+f response produced in preparing body for sudden psychological action > produces physiological reactions such as ⬆️ ❤️ rate and BP = immediate and automatic
- PARASYMPATHETIC BRANCH - returns body back to normal once stressor been removed
> eg homeostasis ❤️⬇️, respiration decreased digestion increases
Outline role of adrenaline in fight/flight response (4)
refer to driving scenario
- causes adrenaline to be released can cause increased production of sweat
- could be off putting in drive test harder to grip wheel
Define role of adrenaline (4)
- hormone released from adrenal medulla > travels through blood stream activates heart circulatory system prepares body for flight and fight
- changes include increase in ❤️⬆️ and blood pressure
these changes important pat of f+f response - ⬆️ blood and oxygen to muscle for action
what is direct affect?
- increased ❤️⬆️ = increasing rate of blood flow and BP
this increases blood flow to 🧠 + 🩻💪🏼
What happens in indirect affect of adrenaline?
- prepares body for action such as fight or flight
> increases blood supply to 🩻💪🏼 for physical action stops digestion and saliva production
> increase in oxygen to 🧠 for rapid response planning
Give a criticism of F+F
P - does not explain stress response in 💁♀️
E - Found that women more likely to protect offspring tend to form alliances with other women (befriend) than to fight or run away
E - suggests that there is gender (beta bias) as f/f response assumes men and women respond in same way to threatening situation prior to this research
L - limiting the explanations of fight/flight response
What is the D point for does not explain stress in females?
D - could be argued that f/f far too simplistic and other responses may be more applicable
What is the second Criticism of F/F response
P - human bh not limited to two responses
E - some psychologists argue first response to danger is to avoid confrontation altogether through a ‘freeze’ 🥶response
E - during response humans consider best course of action for threat they are faced with
L - suggests that f/f does not consider other factors such as thought processes
