Humanistic Theory Flashcards
Give one assumptions of Humanistic approach
- all humans determine their own behaviour and have free will
Give another assumption
- All humans have an innate need for self actualisation
and will achieve provided this provided they have the right environment for personal growth 🌳✅
Explain the first feature FREE WILL
Humanisms argue free will is possible
Humans are self determining our bh due to choices we can reject ❌ internal and external influences such as genes 🧬 or unconscious motives 😵
free will to enable personal change and growth 🌳
Explain the second feauture SELF ACTUALISATION
All humans need to achieve full potential to become best
Maslow = hireachy of needs
more basic needs have to be met before higher needs can be achieved
Explain hierachy of needs
most basic needs are physiological needs req for survival eg 🍔 💧and sleep 😴
safety includes having a 🏠 security of a job 🔑👩✈️ and good health
❤️love belonging and self esteem before being able to self actualise
self actualisation is the highest level and we seek it for personal growth
Give a strength into humansitic psychology
P - holistic approach to exp bh takes account persons subjective exp to influence and explain their bh
E - whereas reductionist apprchs such as bhrst apprch reduce complex human bhv into stimulus response and associations
L - humanism more valid way to understanding human bh irl context than more reductionist alr expl.
Give another strength
P - Prac apps
E - bc of principles of theory individuals have free will to choose their bh has revolutionised counselling techniques led to treatment of PCT
can treat abnormalities irl 🌎 such as depression helping them self actualise
L - therefore important applied psycu helps ppl irl
Give a third strength
P - takes positive apprch to explain human bh argued for free will 😁
E - suggested humans choose own bh and can neglect internal and external influences
eg individuals choices in life affect whether they self actualise
L - more positive apprch to understanding human bh especially compared to deterministic apprchs such as biological apprch argues bh controlled internal influences such as genes 🧬
