TST chapter 14 Flashcards
Fire attack high rise operations
to attack high rise fires from the floor below the fire and to concentrate relief crews and spare equipment on the staging floor, two floors below fire floor
Lobby control
the individual responsible for and the process for of taking and maintaining control of the lobby and the elevators….also internal communications…coordinating the flow of personnel and moving massive amoiunts of tools and equip, ment
low rise elevators
serving lower floors ….ex. floors 1-10
mid -rise elevators
serving floors between low-rise and high-rise floors ….ex. floor 1 and floors 10 thru 20
high-rise elevators
serving up floors …ex. floor 1 and then floors 20 -30
express elevators
serving only the ground level floor and highest floor what ever it may be
freight elevator
serving some or all floors ….if possible ,freight elevators should used instead of passenger elevators due to weight considerations
stack effect
the natural vertical movement of heat and smoke (convection)in tall structures
mushrooming effect
heat, smoke and other products of combustion rise until the encounter a horizontal obstruction. at this point they will spread laterally and begin to bank downward
stratification effect
formation of smoke into layers as a result of differences in density with respect to height with low density layers on top and high density layers on the bottom
high rise ventilation
- vertical (top) ventilation
- horizontal ventilation of the fire floor
- horizontal ventilation above and below fire floor
smoke damper
device that restricts the flow of smoke through thru an air -handling system ….usually activated by the building fire alarm system
curtain boards
vertical boards, fire- resistive half-walls ,that extend down from the underside of the roof of some commercial buildings and are intended to limit the spread of fire, heat, smoke and fire gases
