RST chapter 4 Flashcards
prior to arrival of fire personnel, some of the things you can verify immediately….
- time of day
- weather conditions
- capabilities of your departments response
facts of the situation are things that you know to be true
- preincident survey of the site
- knowledge of the building construction and occupancy
- the current time of day and the day of the week and on-scene observation including a 360 degree survey
- knowledge of basic fire development
Rapid intervention crew or team (RIC/RIT)
two or more firefighters designated to perform firefighter rescue ….they are stationed outside the hazard and must be standing by throughout the incident.
Reading Smoke
light -colored smoke or slow-moving smoke can indicate if the smoke has traveled distance form the origin
reading smoke ll
a small amount of smoke from a large structure could easily be an indicator of a well seated fire inside.
White smoke
indicates the pyrolysis (chemical change by heat) is occurring in areas adjacent to the main body of fire
Brown smoke
common in mid-stage heating as moisture mixes with gases and carbon a pyrolysis increases
Brown smoke is the indication of burning wood whether finished or unfinished.
Gray Smoke
combination of mixing. it can be mid-stage heating with white, brown,or black or different smoke areas combine
Black smoke
contains high quantities of carbon particles and also an indicator of the amount of ventilition available at the seat of the fire
Smoke movement
3 common types of movement in smoke are….floating or hanging ,volume pushed , and heat pushed
CARA…means
- conditions……interior conditions and visible indicators on each side and roof structure
- actions……activities being performed inside and outside of the structure.
- resources…..additional personnel, apparutus,equipment
- air……breathing air supply available for interior fire attack.
Three priorities at an incident, in order of importance
Life Safety…..Incident Stabilization….property conservation….(LIP)
Crew Resource Management (CRM)
is a system that optimizes the utilization of all available resources, personnel, procedures, and equipment in order to promote safety and improve operational efficiency.
CRM …effectiveness by emphasizing the following topics.
- communications
- situational awareness
- decision making
- teamwork
- barriers
means of egress thta should be considered
- doors….location and swing
- windows….find out size see if its large enough to fit a person
- stairs…..do exit stairwell provide exit to outside of the building
- fire escapes…..consider the location ,operation and condition of fire escape…also notice if has been pulled down indicating that it has been used.
- dead-end corridors……based on pre-incident plan consider the presence of dead-end corridors
