BC chapter 14 Flashcards
inadequate structural design
- building code requirements
- engineering standards and practices
- local weather , seismic and flood data
- redundancies and safeguards as relevant
- ensure that proper materials and methods of construction are being used
temporary loads
collapse can result when temporary loads on the structural members exceed final design loads due to careless stockpiling of heavy building materialson upper floors
instability of building frame
during construction may cause failure until the final members of the structural frame are in place, the frame is vulnerable to vertical and horizontal loads
piecemeal demolition
performed with hand tools or machines
controlled collapse demolition
performed with large equipment that may include
* crane with demolition ball
* hydraulics pusher arms
* wire rope pulling
* explosives
common sources of explosions in buildings include
- boiler furnaces
- flammable gas leaks
- gasoline vapors
- finely powdered dust
- storage of fireworks or blasting agents
- industrial processes ,with or without the proper safeguards in place
- illicit labs
- oil extraction using flammable liquids and gases
hurricanes
expect wind-borne debris,such as coastal areas where the basic wind speed is 110 mph or greater, and structures may include special anchors such as a hurricane straps,clips or brackets to provide additional reinforcement
FD must work closely with appropriate agencies when utilities are lost or damaged for reasons….
- damaged electric power systems may ignite combustible materials or energized conductive materials
- ruptured natural gas system may leak into an enclosed area and create an ignition hazard
- ruptured water systems may flood low grade spaces and /or deplete water supplies
