Treating Disorders: Basic Concepts
Psychotherapy:
When you apply psychological techniques through interaction through trained therapists and a client. The goal is to overcome the clients’ difficulties.
Biomedical
Offers prescribed medications or procedures. Antidepressants
Treatment approaches
Social workers are focused more on the social systems
Psychiatrist: specializes in the treatment of psychological disorders.
Psychologist: seek to understand thoughts emotions and feelings.
All seem equally effective
Treatment providers
* Therapeutic alliance
: best predictor of success. Emotional bond between a therapist and a client. If you believe that you and your therapist are a team that you are trying
to solve your problems. Having that with psychiatrist, social worker, or psychologists overall help.
Treatment- Psychoanalysis therapies:
Exploring the unconscious by making the therapist be out of sight of making the client lie down.
Treatment- Dream Analysis:
Analyzing dreams to really see what the client is thinking about.
Psychoanalysis – interpretation & resistance:
Freud believed that peoples dreams, resistances released previously repressed feelings allowing the patient to gain self insight.
Interpretations: Linking the client’s current issues to unconscious conflict that might be going on.
Resistance: When the client blocks material from coming to consciousness from coming to reality. Giving explanation to why the client is having trouble bringing thing to consciousness
Psychoanalysis:
took around 4 to 6 years and you must meet with your therapist for 4 to 5 days.
Psychodynamic therapies
Much more short term than psychoanalysis while facing the therapist instead of lying down. Better adapted to short term work.
Both believe that the symptoms will be reduced when clients are figuring out their
unconscious., Figuring out unconscious childhood memories that might have some
kind of impact.
